SGN Rules and Format

SGN 18 Hole Format

Once per month (usually on the 4th Saturday of every month) The Golf Nuts host an 18 hole tournament at a championship course in the local area. These courses are selected based on cost, availability, degree of difficulty, location (within 50 miles from Sacramento). Semi Annually SGN hosts major events… The Mid Major and Championship finals.  These events are held two Saturdays in July and November.

Registering….Registration is done only online through saturdaygolfnuts.com.  Go to PayPal tab and select the appropriate venue to purchase.  There is an additional purchase for prize money.  Simply select the “all in $20 ” tab to make your purchase.  Complete the registration and purchase before Thursday evening the week of the tournament.  If you do not complete the registration and purchase by the Thursday deadline you will not be eligible for that month’s tournament.

Format…USGA rules apply for play.  Medalist format.  If necessary, all SGN Board modifications override USGA rules.

Scores must be recorded as actual number of strokes….not scores of over or under par.  Scores must be confirmed and verified by all members of the group.  Incorrect scores are cause for disqualification.  Golf Genius Software is used to determine calculations and formulas.

Blatant disregard of USGA and SGN rules are grounds for disqualification.  The SGN Board will review the infraction and determine the decision of disqualification.  If a participant is disqualified the green fees and pot fees are not refunded.  If a player demands a refund the player will be banned from any future SGN hosted events.

Flights are A Flight and B Flights.  These flight determinations are fluid. It is SGN’s objective to split the field in equal halves.  Generally, A Flighter are from Scratch to 13.9.  B Flighters are 14.1 and higher. However this can change based on number of entrants.

During regular season (March – November) Points are awarded based on comparing  A flight net scores and B flight net scores.  Tournament champions are determined based on TOP 10 lowest tournament scores

SGN 9 Hole Format

The schedule for our weekly can be found at saturdaygolfnuts.com.  This schedule will allow you to see where and when we are hosting are weekly nine hole events. At times unforeseeable circumstances arise. You will be notified via, text, phone call or email the change in venue.  However this change is only for the date in question.  We will resume our scheduled events immediately following the temporary change in venue.

On nine hole outings each member is responsible for their green fees and cart.  Simply check in at the pro shop and pay for your green fees, carts, and merchandise.

Playing format Nine Holes

Format is medal play…USGA rules apply unless modified by the SGN Board.

Ex: Gimme’s are allowed if the resting ball is within the gripper grip length of the hole. Each member tallies the strokes for each hole. The participant notifies the designated scorekeepers of the group.  It is recommended each group designate 2 scorekeepers so each player can have their score validated.  At the end of the round the scores are verified and tallied and submitted to the scorer’s table.  Your course handicap is pre-calculated by the USGA’s World Handicap System.  This handicap formula then determines the score you achieved.  Winners are determined by lowest scores…First, Second, and Third.

Pot Entries…Members can play each week without entering pots.  If you do not enter pots you cannot be eligible for year end point totals or prize money.

$7…Entrants are eligible to win prizes and points for earning TOP 3 Lowest Scores, 2 closest to the pin contests, handicap skins contest, and team’s contest.

Handicap skins are won if a participant scores the lowest score on a given hole including their handicap for that hole. If there is a tie there are no winners.  Teams score contest winners are determined by a blind draw at the end of the round to determine your teammate. Top 3 Low Score Winners are excluded from this contest.  Your score and teammate’s score are combined.  The lowest team score wins prize money and points.

This $7 pot Mandatory if you are entering pots…$1 per participant is taken from this entry fee. This is created to help fund the year end prize championship money, top 16 winners prize fund, top 20 SGN membership renewal, Most improved and Points champion trophies and prize money.

Optional pots…

$3…Birdie Pot…Entrants who enter this pot will receive prize money if they score a actual birdie.  If an entrant scores a actual eagle the entrant gets paid as if they scored 3 birdies.  Payouts are based on the number of entrants divided by the number of birdies.

$5…Scratch Skin Pot…Entrants win if they score the lowest individual score on a particular hole…example…Hole 11 two or more participants score a net par or higher.  This a “push”. No winners.  Hole 15 1 participant scores a birdie. Other participants score a net par or higher.  Winner is the participant scoring a birdie.  Final payouts are based on number of participants divided by number of Scratch skin winners.

Each week members are automatically entered into the pots they were entered the last time they competed.  Each member can change their pot entries if they notify members of their group prior to teeing off on the first hole.

Participants cannot play by themselves.  They must play with another SGN member.  If a member finds themselves the only player on the first hole they can start the hole alone but the “hole out” must be verified by a member of the group in front of the individual.  If the score cannot be verified the hole is not counted.  The player is not eligible for points and prizes for an incomplete score.  They are eligible for remaining pots as long as those scores can be verified.

SGN General Rules

Only members can participate in SGN events.  A temporary membership can be obtained with a daily $2 entry fee. A temporary member can only participate in handicap calculated events if they have a verifiable index.  If an existing SGN member cannot verify a temporary index the temporary member will use 75% of their submitted index when entering money pots.

USGA Rules apply for all forms of participation unless noted prior to the start of an event.  Generally SGN will modify rules to improve “PACE OF PLACE”.

Examples of the following

I…Gimmes…If a putt is with the length of the putter grip it is a gimme

II…Out of Bounds…if you hit your shot O.B. Hit a provisional from that spot or take a drop at POINT OF ENTRY at the Out of Bounds Line.  2 clubs from the spot of entry. Add 2 penalty strokes then proceed.  You CANNOT drop from the fairway nor from an area near the fairway.  Do not return to original spot if you went to look for your ball and determined it is O.B. or cannot be found.

III…Lost Ball …3 minutes to look for lost ball.  If ball cannot be found a decision (with assistance from the group) will determine where the ball shall be played from.  Take a drop add 2 penalty strokes then proceed.

IV…Preferred Lies, Winter Rules, Lift, Clean, and Place.  These formats are generally used in winter months.  SGN will make that determination prior to teeing off.  If Preferred Lies, Winter Rules, ETC are not designated the player must play the ball as it lies.  Administer USGA rules if the player does not comply.

V…Leaf Rule…Many courses are not equipped to properly remove fallen leaves and debris from the course.  If your ball is deemed to be hidden under fallen leaves or fallen brush the player must have a majority agreement from the group that his ball is hidden.  It is only then the player can receive a free drop (no penalty) from that designated area and proceed.  If the majority cannot agree the ball is deemed lost and the player proceeds accordingly.

VI…Spirit of Fairness…If a rule cannot be found or interpreted SGN has given authority to the majority vote within the group to make to a fair decision.  If a decision still cannot be made… the decisive outcome is then a majority vote of the Board. That ruling is then final.

VII…Handicapping…SGN Handicap Committee along with a PGA professional will review the membership roster’s index weekly.  The objective is to determine each member’s truest index.  The committee will look for the lowest of the following trends…

A…What is the member’s current index as calculated by the USGA software

B…What is the member’s current index when observing the lowest 2 of 4 tournament scores.  Taking the lowest 2 scores divide by 2 to determine a member’s SGN Index

SGN will then use the lowest of the two indexes as the player’s index for SGN events

It is advised each member purchase or download the most currently USGA rule book and study it thoroughly.  This practice will undoubtedly save you 1 – 3 strokes per event. KNOW THE RULES MEANS KNOWING YOUR OPTIONS.  If a decision cannot be reached play 2 balls to complete the hole.
